Fatal error: Allowed memory size

estou tendadno fazer uma listagem de registro e da este erro, tem bastante registro mas é estranho. O que faço é ir recuperando as linhas e adciono a uma variável tipo assim:

$retorno .= "$linha"

alguém sabe porque esse erro ocorre?
